I have had great luck with the Amazon Warehouse Deals (usually means an opened return or the box got a bit scuffed). Good way for broke folks like me to get this great product.I use both these cushy ones and the hard black ones, in different spots, for housecats indoors and a feral out in the shed. I have five or six now and the oldest must be around 5y, zero problems so far. I have 6 dogs, according to what the universe decided I should have at the moment… one of them is a stray that appeared almost 1 year ago to date that was obviously severely abused. I tested it first, it just warms a bit, it would not burn a baby. I put it into kitty’s house with his blankee. It only comes on when kitty is on it, then it turns off when kitty leaves. I have a little eight pound terrier mix. He has hair, not fur, so not much to keep him warm. After two spinal surgeries, he can no longer get under blankets on his own or sleep in the bed. This is the second of these pads I bought (2 cats) for the cold weather here in the mountains. Yesterday, for the first time, I tried the high temp setting (the 3 settings are off, low, high). My wife suggested just to double check the heat from the pad and boy was I glad I did. The mat became so hot, I could not leave my hand on it. Luckily. The heat is well-distributed, and the pad is merely warm to the touch even on the highest setting. I like this. My principal concern about a heating pad was possible overheating, and a possible fire hazard. The fact that this pad does not get hot reassures me. The cover is soft and comfortable. I keep my house pretty cool and my cat refuses to sleep in bed, preferring to stay downstairs where it’s the coldest. At first, I was skeptical that my cat would use this. The pad is sort of hard with a thin cloth covering. But after a couple days, he started using it.I recommend turning it on an hour before it’s needed to let it warm up. Also start with the default lower temps first and work your way up. If you set it to high and it’s too hot, your pet may decide to avoid it altogether. I purchased one bed for my eldest cat (15yrs) and then my other cat (13 yrs)started laying on it, too! I purchased her one last one last week. I like that I can leave it on a low setting and it stays at a low constant heat when I don’t set the timer.
